Introducing Prof. Brian Rooney, the esteemed Laboratory Director of Kingston Analytical Services Toxicology since its inception. Prof. Rooney brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his role, overseeing all laboratory analyses of casework samples and contributing to the composition of expert reports.
Prof. Brian Rooney’s academic journey includes completing his BSc and PhD at the University College of Dublin. Currently a Professor and Director of Research at Kingston University, he is not only a certified expert witness but also regularly called upon to provide expert testimony in magistrate and crown courts. Prof. Rooney’s previous roles include valuable contributions to the Road Traffic Toxicology Laboratory at both the Medical Bureau of Road Safety and LGC Forensics.
Beyond his responsibilities at KAST, Prof. Rooney serves as the principal investigator for two research laboratories specializing in molecular biology and analytical chemistry. His research focuses on elucidating the effects of cannabis and cocaine on the parthenogenesis of fibrosis, and the development of novel analytical techniques to detect drugs of abuse in biological matrices. Prof. Rooney’s diverse research interests extend to collaborations with forensic practitioners across the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand, further contributing to advancements in the field of forensic science. His leadership and commitment to cutting-edge research make Prof. Brian Rooney an integral force behind KAST’s success in forensic toxicology.
Gavin Trotter
Scientific Lead
Meet Gavin, the Scientific Lead at KAST, bringing over 25 years of expertise in the field of road traffic toxicology. Gavin is entrusted with the crucial responsibility of enforcing and maintaining the laboratory’s analytical testing methods. In addition, he oversees the reporting and expert witness training of KAST staff, ensuring the highest standards of excellence in forensic science.
Prior to joining KAST, Gavin held distinguished roles as the Casework Lead and Head of the Forensic Toxicology laboratory at LGC Forensics. His extensive experience and leadership have made him a respected figure in the industry. Gavin is a Chartered Chemist and a proud member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC).
Gavin’s contributions to the field are not only practical but also academic. He has published several high-profile papers in areas such as road traffic toxicology, drug-facilitated sexual assault, and the pharmacokinetics of alcohol. His wealth of knowledge and commitment to advancing forensic science make Gavin an invaluable asset to the KAST team, guiding the laboratory towards excellence in every aspect of its operations
Lili Saskőy
Technical Lead
Meet Lili, a cornerstone of KAST since she joined in 2021. As Technical Lead, Lili plays a pivotal role in the day-to-day functioning of the laboratory. Her responsibilities extend to the maintenance and care of analytical instruments, ensuring the seamless operation of our state-of-the-art equipment.
Lili specializes in the development and validation of cutting-edge LC-MS and GC-MS/MS techniques for the analysis of drugs of abuse in biological samples. Her expertise in forensic science was honed during her BSc in Forensic Science at Kingston University, where she has also embarked on a PhD journey under the guidance of Prof. Brian Rooney.
Lili’s current research focus is on the detection of cannabinoids in hair, a project conducted in collaboration with a partnering forensic service provider. Her commitment to advancing forensic science is evident not only in her research endeavours but also in her recent contributions to KAST. Lili has played a crucial role in aligning our laboratory practices with the stringent standards of ISO/IEC 17025, paving the way for accreditation from UKAS. Her dedication and expertise continue to elevate KAST’s capabilities in forensic toxicology.
Paul Greenwood
Quality Control Manager
Introducing Paul, our esteemed consulting Quality Control Manager at Kingston Analytical Toxicology Services (KAST) since 2023. As the former Operations Director of UKAS, Paul brings a wealth of experience and expertise in the field of quality control. With a background in analytical chemistry, he has been instrumental in shaping and enhancing our quality management system.
Paul’s extensive knowledge and commitment to maintaining the highest standards have played a pivotal role in KAST’s journey towards achieving ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. His role as a consulting Quality Control Manager involves leveraging his experience to ensure that our laboratory operations meet and exceed the stringent requirements set forth by international standards.

Kimberly Hampton-Sheley
Quality Control Specialist
Meet Kim, our dedicated Quality Control Specialist at KAST. With a wealth of experience gained from years at LGC Forensics, Kimberly brings extensive knowledge of forensic toxicology testing and report writing to her role.
As the principal internal auditor, Kim plays a crucial role in ensuring that our laboratory adheres to the stringent standards set out in ISO/IEC 17025. Her meticulous approach and attention to detail contribute to maintaining the highest levels of quality and accuracy in our forensic toxicology services.
Beyond her quality control responsibilities, Kim also takes charge of ensuring the health and safety practices within our laboratory, underscoring our commitment to providing a secure and efficient working environment. We are fortunate to have Kim as a key member of the KAST team, where her expertise and dedication significantly contribute to upholding the standards of excellence in our forensic toxicology operations.
Mellissa Gentry
Quality Lead
Meet Mellissa, a valuable member of the KAST team since 2023. Mellissa joined us as part of a professional placement during her MSc in Forensic Toxicology at Kingston University in 2023 and has since been promoted to Quality Lead. With a keen eye for detail, Mellissa not only keeps the laboratory organised but takes on the crucial responsibilities of quality control and internal auditing.
Beyond routine sample preparation and analysis, she plays a pivotal role in overseeing the day-to-day quality control system, ensuring the highest standards in our operations. In her short time at KAST, Mellissa has made significant contributions to our document control system, aligning it with the standards anticipated for our ISO 17025 accreditation. Her dedication and expertise continue to enhance the efficiency and reliability of our forensic toxicology services. Looking ahead, Mellissa is currently working on her PhD, focussing on the role of alcohol and drugs in sexual assault cases under the supervision of Prof. Brian Rooney.
Yulia Laricheva

Meet Yulia, a key member of the KAST team who joined ahead of the initial UKAS assessments for accreditation in forensic toxicology testing. Yulia’s commitment to excellence has played a crucial role in shaping and enhancing laboratory operations and procedures, ensuring strict adherence to ISO/IEC 17025 standards. Notably, she successfully completed the formal validation of our GC-MS/MS method for the quantification of cannabis, showcasing her technical proficiency.
Having completed her MSc in Forensic Toxicology, Yulia is now embarking on a PhD journey under the guidance of Prof. Brian Rooney. With a background in pharmaceutical sciences, Yulia’s research focus lies in the development of a qualitative method for the detection of all S5a controlled drugs using LC-MS/MS. Her expertise extends beyond research, as Yulia serves as the primary reporting officer for all statements and actively contributes to the training of new laboratory staff. Yulia’s dedication and contributions play a pivotal role in KAST’s pursuit of excellence in forensic toxicology.

Introducing Alpha, an experienced Forensic Practitioner who joined KAST in 2023. Alpha brings with her a wealth of expertise in solid-phase extraction and data analysis, gained from her prior role as an Analyst in Eurofins’ Forensic Toxicology Testing laboratory. Alpha is also the go-to person for help when it comes to laboratory duties, demonstrating her commitment to being a team player.
A proud alumna of Kingston University, Alpha holds a BSc in Forensic Science. Currently pursuing her PhD, Alpha’s research is centred around the development of a cutting-edge GC-MS/MS method for the detection of PEth. This innovative work is conducted in collaboration with a forensic service provider, showcasing Alpha’s commitment to advancing forensic science. Her diverse background and dedication make Alpha an integral part of KAST’s mission to provide high-quality and forward-thinking forensic toxicology services.

Forensic Practitioner
Meet Esmé, a dedicated and talented member of the KAST team. A familiar face in the laboratory, Esmé first joined us during her undergraduate research project and has since become an integral part of our team. She is responsible for sample preparation, extraction and analysis for the laboratory’s alcohol and drug testing — always ensuring that every step meets the highest standards of quality and precision.
With a strong academic foundation and a genuine passion for forensic toxicology, Esmé continues to make valuable contributions to the lab’s ongoing success. Soon, she will be embarking on her PhD, focusing on the societal impacts of GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs — an exciting project that highlights her curiosity, drive, and commitment to advancing scientific understanding.
Lila Davies
Forensic Practitioner, Part-Time
Introducing Lila, the newest member of the KAST team who supports the day-to-day operations of the laboratory. She assists with sample preparation, laboratory maintenance, and quality control processes, ensuring that all work meets the high standards required for accredited testing. With a keen eye for detail and a growing passion for forensic science, Lila contributes to the smooth and efficient running of the laboratory while developing her technical skills and experience within the field.
